Statement

What I love about Cyprus is our history, our values, and our virtues. Being Turkish Cypriot is not necessarily about waiving a massive flag, firing up the barbeque at every opportunity or insisting your future is at the bottom of a coffee cup. For me, being Turkish Cypriot is something much deeper than that… It is about helping others in need, purifying our hearts, standing up for what is right (even if it is against us) and working hard towards the betterment of society.

Despite the several political administrations of Cyprus throughout history, we as a people have demonstrated our adaptability and versatility having lived alongside other Turks, Greeks, Armenians, Muslims, Christians, Maronites and others for centuries. When our grandparents / parents courageously migrated to Britain, they proactively integrated with society, adopting a new language, new skills and embracing new cultural customs. They worked hard to give us the opportunities they never had, whilst holding on firmly to our philosophy of life and principles. As a result, we are still able to appreciate our rich cultural heritage that continues to be deeply embedded within our community, our music, our festivals and even our food.

As a third generation Turkish Cypriot born in the UK, I want to continue in the footsteps of our ancestors and be part of the change I’d like to see in our community, whilst holding on to these beautiful values we all hold dear to us. I am passionate about helping others, regardless of their faith, ethnicity, or gender, and I believe when we put aside our differences, we can achieve great things together as one. TCCA is at the heart of the community and I sincerely feel that I can leverage my skills and experience to help improve the organisation and ultimately the lives of others as well as the wider society in which we reside.

About Me

My name is Munevver Borova, I was born in Lefkosa Cyprus, where following my studies I became a Teacher and then moved into the field of Social Care, where I taught adults with special needs, promoting independence, and working in various projects specifically covering Autism and Down Syndrome. My work within Special Needs lasted 13 years. However, following a serious work-based accident left me wheelchair bound.

Following my accident rather than sitting back, I become extremely committed to supporting those most vulnerable in our society, the Homeless, the destitute, and those in need. I began to cook for the homeless wanting to provide food, care, and shelter for those who society pushed aside. In 2018 I formed a not-for-profit organisation called CATI-Roof, with the target to help the homeless by providing food, sourcing essentials, and helping with street tents. By 2019 with a small team, daily I was reaching out homeless people in Westminster, Charing Cross, London Bridge, and the surrounding areas, and my work was recognised by receiving a nomination under the Turkish Cypriot Community Awards, for female community achiever of the year and charity of the year.

By 2020 with the backdrop of the Covid-19 with partner organisations I spearheaded a movement that now during Covid-19 is providing homeless around 300 meals a week, as an example of my commitment to charitable events, over the Christmas period we provided over 270 Christmas Gift with Christmas card and Christmas meals, ensuring that no one goes without.

Why I wish to be a Trustee

TCCA is an amazing organisation, that delivers many essential projects, the organisation literally saves lives and provides the most vulnerable in our community with hope. The charity leads a host of platforms that in turn recognise achievement, including the Turkish Cypriot Cultural and Arts Festival and the Turkish Cypriot Community Awards. Over the past five years I have volunteered my time to the projects that support the most in need helping with the TCCA 2018-2019-2020 Homelessness initiatives, last year I joined the TCCA Covid 19 Initiative and have helped with the distribution of food.

I want to join the board as I feel that my skill set, and my passion will allow me to enhance the already amazing group of individuals leading TCCA. I feel that due to being wheelchair bound I can help develop initiatives that support the drive to help those who have physical limitations. I am based in South London and feel that I can help further expand our geographical remit in South London.

I also want to utilise my skills as a highly qualified Teacher, to provide expertise for the development of projects that support mental Health and neurological disorder.

A Personal Statement

TCCA is a vital service provider to Turkish speaking Cypriots. It is further one of the oldest of such essential service providers to our community. In line with our founders’ intention, the Association reaches out to the needy.

As someone who has spent a lifetime setting up commercial opportunities, business negotiations, and successfully running companies, I feel there are many areas I can help TCCA. Such as;

  • We failed to generate adequate funds for our projects from the Turkish Cypriot Community. I will therefore seek to raise additional funds from our community at large
  • Our community’s needy elders need to be transported to health practitioners, shopping, to TCCA for meeting other members, etc. It is incumbent on the TCCA to help them. I can assist in acquiring or allocate funding for such community-wide assistance by acquiring a minibüs.
  • Covid-19 has decimated our community. Although the TCCA provided and continues to provide food parcels to the needy, I believe that we have only reached a small fraction of the community’s needy. As a community association, our reach into the community is limited, as we can see from our membership numbers. I propose installing a membership drive by creating a Turkish Cypriots database and then contacting each household to introduce our presence and services. Only through such knowledge we can be genuinely community-centric and not reactive in crises.
  • Covid-19 has highlighted another of our community’s shortcomings; chronic illnesses. I propose that TCCA installs a medical adviser, albeit initially on a part-time basis, to educate our community in Diabetes, Hypertension, and Cholesterol.
  • It is essential to attract younger Turkish Cypriots. If elected, I will champion several community-based courses for young people, including language, sciences, TC cuisine, and arts.
  • If elected, I shall carry out an organization-based audit to maximise resources and streamline our cost base. Our focus should be “Client-centric.”
  • TCCA should actively organise forums to discuss specific community-wide issues such as immigration, housing, work, and legal. Current efforts are inadequate.
  • The TCCA’s web site and social media pages are all in English. Forthwith, these will also be in Turkish.
  • As a trustee, I will encourage performance achievement goals from the management. Only through this way would the administration be assertive.
